Do you need to hire a cleaning service?
If you found our website then I am guessing you may be in the process of searching for a commercial cleaning service in the Albany area. There are many cleaning services to choose from, how can you be sure that the cleaning service you hire will be the right one?
Don’t worry, I will give you the facts (and a few opinions) to help you be completely informed. When people are looking to hire a janitorial company, there are usually two reasons. One- they are unhappy with their current cleaning company or two they are moving into a new building and need a new service.
Tips For Hiring a Commercial Cleaning Service:
- Ask about insurances including workers compensation. Many smaller cleaning companies do not carry workers comp.
- Avoid franchises – ok this is an opinion, but after 30 years in the cleaning business, I have heard some franchise horror stories.
- Talk with the owner of the company if you do not meet them initially. There’s nothing wrong with the owner having someone else do the estimate, but it’s a good idea to speak with them as well.
- Check references, but only if you’re ready to hire.
- Don’t go with a bid if you know that it’s too low. It will come back to haunt you.
A few other thoughts:
What about setting the appointment? When you scheduled the estimate was it handled professionally? All the initial contact dialog is an indicator of how the company will respond when you have concerns. You want to hire a service that has a quick response when you need something.
How about the estimate? Did the person show up on time? Were they dressed professionally? I have seen cleaning service owners show up to do an estimate dressed in grubby cleaning attire. If that’s how they represent themselves I think you need to be concerned.
What about the proposal? Did you receive it promptly? Was it clean and professional? Easy to read? Sometimes you may interview a cleaning service and find that they are slow to get back to you. Red flag!! If they are slow to get back to you then they are probably not equipped to take more clients.
Make sure there’s a detailed list of services to be provided. Again, all the little things now, are a good sign of how things will be. Then there are references, did you check them? Now the big one- price. We never want to be the low bidder, in the cleaning business like any other service business you get what you pay for.
I have seen people go with the low bid over and over, only to be disappointed, Proper cleaning takes time, good help requires above average pay. Bitterness from poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of a low price. I bet you have heard that before.
I hope these things have helped you in your decision, you have a business to run and spending time dealing with vendors can be very distracting. There’s no guarantee that a new service will eliminate the problems you may have had. Do you best to carefully screen them, then work closely with them during the transition.
